“I will duel you for that.” A tribesman, perhaps even younger than I, stepped forward. Black fur with sprouts of gray draped over one shoulder. “Honor requires you duel me for the spoils.”

“Styrmin.” We turned to find Prollin, the man we’d met on the hill, pacing toward us. “There will be no challenge. The goddess’s chosen has come this day to liberate us of a soured boil upon our land. We lay claim to the forests, and we shall undoubtedly benefit from her long-lost presence in our domain. This man offers that.

“But chief, it is only proper—”

“That one so inexperienced and young as yourself take possession of a stronghold over the goddess’s chosen?” He paused for a long moment, letting the younger man digest the words. When he showed no intention of changing his mind, even less his expression, Prollin nodded, unclasped his furs, then swung them out to one side, where another warrior took hold of them. Sweat glistened on his pale skin, but the cold would take care of that soon enough. “Fine. You may challenge for the stone. But you will fight your chief.”

The young man’s attention diverted to me then back to his leader. He dropped his spear then took three steps back and dipped to one knee. “I defer, of course.”
